About

I am a researcher and educator in the field of humanitarian studies. I have been researching issues of humanitarianism, civil society, transnational movements, and international relations since 2014. My work falls into three streams:
  • international movements that aims to support the wellbeing of people in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), in particular transnational humanitarian efforts
  • global issues of humanitarianism, including power, governance, and the construction of humanitarian concepts
  • humanitarian education and pedagogy, focused on humanitarian learning and training, including in university settings.
My career ambition is for my research and teaching to contribute to making humanitarian response more just, equitable, and effective.

As of November 2023, I am based at the University of Groningen in the northern Netherlands. From 2018 - 2023, I worked at Deakin University and the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership, a Deakin/Save the Children Australia partnership based in Melbourne. I have also worked and studied in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Germany, Belgium, France, and Scotland. I grew up in Massachusetts, USA.  I took the banner photo, of a mailbox in Pyongyang, in July 2016.
